On Monday, Feb. 15, an off-duty New Rochelle police officer was involved in an altercation with a person from Mount Vernon, the department announced on Friday, Feb. 18.

According to the department, the altercation followed an apparent domestic dispute between the person and a member of his family that was observed by the off-duty officer.

An initial review of the incident found that the off-duty officer’s actions were “inappropriate,” and he has been levied a 30-day unpaid suspension, the most severe disciplinary measure the department could impose under the circumstances.

It is unclear what “inappropriate” actions the off-duty officer took or the nature of the domestic dispute.

The matter has also been referred to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office for further review.

The New Rochelle Police Department noted that the altercation took place in the presence of several on-duty officers, all of whom acted appropriately.

“The New Rochelle Police Department trains its members to intervene when they observe improper conduct among colleagues, including, as in this case, senior colleagues, and the on-duty officers in this case demonstrated the importance of such training,” officials said.
